National Semiconductor today introduced their new LMH0394 and LMH0395 (dual outputs), 3G HD/SD SDI Extended Reach and Configurable Adaptive Cable Equalizers. According to NatSemi, LMH0394/LMH0395 extends the reach of broadcast video signals by 40% (200 meters at 3 Gbps) while delivering half the power (115 mW typical) of comparable equalizers. LMH0394/LMH0395 SDI (Serial Digital Interface) Cable Equalizers operates over a wide range of data rates from 125 Mbps to 2.97 Gbps and supports SMPTE 424M, SMPTE 292M, SMPTE 344M, SMPTE 259M, and DVB-ASI standards.

The emergence of 3D-TV, which requires stereoscopic video to be captured with two independent cameras, is forcing broadcasters to migrate to higher data rates (up to 3 Gbps) to transport high-definition (HD) video signals between equipment. The increased data rates present signal integrity and power budget challenges at greater distances. The LMH0394 addresses these challenges by providing the industry’s longest reach across all supported data rates – 200m at 3 Gbps (3G), 220m at HD and 400m at standard definition (SD) – and the lowest power consumption.

NatSemi’s LMH0394 SDI Cable Equalizer - Typical Application
LMH0394/LMH0395 SDI Cable Equalizers supports two modes of operation: pin mode and SPI mode. In pin mode, the LMH0394 operates with control pins to set its operating state, and is footprint compatible with the LMH0384, LMH0344, and legacy SDI equalizers. In SPI mode, an optional SPI serial interface can be used to access and configure multiple LMH0394 devices in a daisy-chain configuration. This allows programming the output common mode voltage and swing, output de-emphasis level, input launch amplitude, and power management settings, as well as access to a cable length indicator and all pin mode features.
