Posted in Zilog, User Interface, Sensor, Motor & Motion ControlOn Wednesday, December 12, 2007
Zilog announced the Z8 Encore! XP F1680 Series, a low voltage/low power 8-bit embedded flash microcontroller (MCU) with extended peripherals. F1680 microcontrollers are based on the popular eZ8 CPU core with integrated peripheral, that are optimized for applications requiring touch screen functionality, resistive and capacitive sensing, backlit control, panel control, temperature compensation and motor control.
Michelle Leyden Li, Zilog, stated:
With its extended, intelligent peripheral set and power savings, the new F1680 Series adds even more design flexibility and choice to our award-winning Z8 Encore! XP embedded Flash family of MCUs… The power-saving, cost-conscious, designer friendly attributes of the new F1680 Series allows us to deliver the best results for a variety of today’s leading-edge applications…

Key features of Zilog Z8Encore! XP F1680 Series includes:
|
- 20 MHz register-to-register eZ8 CPU core with memory-to-memory arithmetic
operation
- New instructions for improved performance including BIT, BSWAP, BTJ, CPC, LDC, LDCI, LEA, MULT, and SRL
- New instructions supporting 12-bit linear addressing of the Register File
- Up to 10 MIPS operation, 2 to 9 clock cycles per instruction
- Compatible with existing Zilog Z8 code
- C-Compiler friendly
- Up to 24KB Flash memory, and up to 2KB register RAM, 1KB program RAM and 256 Bytes EEPROM
- Up to 8-channels, 10-bit SAR ADC with 4.9ums conversion time
- Three-enhanced 16-bit timers with capture/compare/PWM and demodulation capability
- On-chip temperature sensor; low-power Op-Amp, two analog comparators and programmable LVD
- Multiple serial interfaces with two LIN UARTs, ESPI and PC
- Built-in, IPO with programmable output from 43.2KHz to 11 MHz
- Single-pin, On-Chip Debugger (OCD)
Members of XP F1680 Series feature either 24 KB, 16 KB, and 8 KB of on-chip, nonvolatile Flash memory with read/write/erase and in-circuit programming capability. The Flash memory can be programmed and erased by either user code or through the On-Chip Debugger (OCD). The microcontrollers supports EEPROM capability through a Non-Volatile Data Storage (NVDS) element of up to 256 bytes. This memory can perform over 100,000 write cycles. The NVDS is implemented by special purpose Zilog software stored in areas of Program memory not accessible to you. These special purpose routines use the Flash memory to store the data. The routines incorporate a dynamic addressing scheme to maximize the Write/Erase endurance of the Flash.
XP F1680 microcontrollers includes an eight-channel Successive Approximation Register Analog-to- Digital converter (SAR ADC). The features of the ADC include:
- Eight analog input sources multiplexed with general-purpose I/O ports
- Fast conversion time of 4.9 µs
- Programmable timing controls
- Internal 1.6 V voltage reference generator
The Z8 Encore! XP F1680 microcontrollers feature a rich array of communication peripherals, including:
- 2 LIN UARTs (Master/Slave)
- Enhanced SPI (ESPI)
- I2C Master/Slave
The on-chip Temperature Sensor is able to to measure temperature on the die to an accuracy of roughly ±7 °C over a range of -40 °C to +105 °C or ±1.5 °C accuracy over the range of 20 °C to 30 °C. This sensor is capable of flash recalibration, and is a moderately accurate temperature sensor for low-power applications where high accuracy is not required.
F1680 Series Development Tool
Zilog’s Z8 Encore! XP F1680 Microcontrollers is backed by a comprehensive development tools package that includes:
- Reference design evaluation board and a full set of support documentation
- USB Smart Cable for connecting the PC to the F1680 Series development board
