Wind River Systems announced the immediate availability of the Wind River Advanced Networking Technologies, the DSO (Device Software Optimization) advanced networking technology portfolio. Wind River Advanced Networking Technologies integrate functionality, including mobility, wireless, security, and advanced IP networking capabilities,  into both VxWorks and Wind River Linux platforms.

Kuljeet Kalkat, Wind River, said:

This product set is designed to benefit Network Equipment Providers (NEPs) who seek to improve system performance, minimize latency and footprint, and optimize time to revenue across a wide range of DSO markets for core, edge, access and endpoint network elements…

It also provides an important stepping-stone for companies moving from proprietary hardware to COTS hardware by allowing the re-use of existing software intellectual property as it moves from one hardware platform to another. Equipment manufacturers can now meet the ever-expanding connectivity requirements, regardless of the underlying operating system…

About Device Software Optimization (DSO)

Device Software Optimization is a methodology that enables companies to develop and run device software faster, better, at lower cost, and more reliably. It implements a seven part strategy:

  • Standardization of technologies, tools, and processes across the enterprise
  • Reuse of intellectual property
  • Embrace of open standards
  • Operating system agnosticism
  • Services and support, available globally, delivered locally
  • A broad ecosystem of hardware and software partners
  • A flexible, enterprise-wide licensing model

Technology providers are increasingly mapping their product offerings to the tenets of DSO. Once all strategies are implemented, DSO solutions are differentiated by execution, performance, scalability, and ROI.

While device software runs on top of 98% of the world’s microprocessors and collectively constitutes today’s largest and fastest-growing technology market, it is still arguably immature. Because devices differ so widely by form factor, vertical market, and function, companies have been slow to recognize and capitalize on the fundamental sameness of development technologies and processes. Instead, many key companies, and many development teams within those companies, have created multiple one-off, in-house solutions that don’t integrate and don’t scale. The resulting fragmentation produces discouraging results across the industry, 66% of projects completed behind schedule, 33% functionally unacceptable, 24% cancelled before completion.

Wind River Advanced Networking Technologies include:

  • Core Networking: Dual IPv4/IPv6 support – IPv6 phase2 logo certification
  • Wireless Networking and Wireless Security: 802.11 a/b/g; 802.1x, 802.11i, WPA/WPA2
  • Security: IPsec, IKE v1, IKE v2, cryptography offloading, SSL, SSH, 802.1x, EAP framework, NAT, Firewall
  • Mobile IP: MIP home agent, foreign agent and mobile node
  • Routing: Policy-based Routing, Virtual Routing Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), Equal Cost Multi-Path routing (ECMP)
  • Network Management: SNMPv1/v2/v3, AgentX, CLI, Web
  • Quality of Service: ALT-Q, Differentiated Services (DiffServ)

Wind River Advanced Networking Technologies are available for both VxWorks and Wind River Linux platforms, allowing engineer to build application that can easily move from project to project regardless of the underlying operating systems or hardware. This flexibility maximizes developer efficiencies and enables the re-use of valuable intellectual property.

Mike Langlois, President at LANGLOISGROUP, Inc:

The communications industry and other vertical market segments building next generation networking equipment are just starting to realize the tremendous development efficiencies and time-to-market benefits of COTS hardware and software solutions…

Commercially available, standards-based components like Wind River Advanced Networking Technologies will contribute to the acceleration of the adoption of COTS-based solutions in networking infrastructures…

Benefits of Wind River Advanced Networking Technologies:

  • Includes advanced networking, security, and mobility protocols on Linux that are not currently available in open-source
  • Wind River proprietary implementation not covered under GPL
  • Smaller, more scalable footprint than the Linux native stack
  • Extreme scalability of routing table entries and interfaces
  • Straightforward, easy to read, well-organized product code
  • Fully supported by Wind River global support team

Rajiv Khemani, Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Cavium Networks, stated:

Wind River's high performance networking software technologies are a great complement to the powerful OCTEON Multi-core MIPS64 processor solutions for next generation intelligent networking systems…

The combination of Wind River's operating systems, software and tools with our broad line of software compatible OCTEON processors creates an ideal environment for developers to take full advantage of the advanced security and application hardware acceleration capabilities required for today’s network elements…

Paul Senior, Chief Technical Officer at Airspan Networks, said:

When Airspan Networks wanted to build a next-generation wireless WiMAX subscriber station, it found that Wind River was the only DSO vendor that could provide all of the necessary development components: real-time operating system, device management, high performance router stack and advanced networking technologies…

Wind River allowed Airspan to accelerate time to market and ensure reliability of its end product with a standards-based solution that supports current and emerging networking standards." Today Airspan is faster to market than their competition, and its WiMAX-based technology provides wireless broadband access to even the most congested metropolitan areas…

Wind River Advanced Networking Technologies are integrated into VxWorks 6.5 platforms. The components are available as add-ons for all previous versions of VxWorks 6.x. For Wind River Linux, all validated components are available as a single add-on bundle for the newly available Wind River Linux Edition 1.5 platforms, and for all the previously released Wind River Linux Edition platforms.
