NXP Semiconductors (founded by Philips) announced the availability of WiMAX 2×2 MIMO transceivers for mobile and handheld applications (MIMO = Multiple Input Multiple Output) . By Implementing 2×2 MIMO technology, the new WiMAX transceiver can handle for twice data throughput and double the maximum speed of the NXP’s existing WiMAX transceiver solutions.

About NXP’s WiMAX Base Stations and WiMAX Handsets Solutions
NXP offers base stations and handsets solution for WiMAX standard. The NXP UXA234xx series is a set of fully integrated, direct conversion transceivers, low-power, which enable robust and reliable broadband communication for mobile devices such as phones, laptops, PCMCIA cards and PDAs.  The UXA234xx transceivers allow seamless handover between base stations.

One of few 2×2 MIMO WiMAX solutions in the industry, NXP’s new family of UXA234xx WiMAX transceivers improves reach and drives greater bandwidth and spectral efficiency, being particularly effective for accessing a WiMAX connection in dense urban areas. It addresses the requirements of bandwidth-intensive mobile applications, such as streaming voice/video data.

The new WiMAX transceivers guarantees seamless handover between base stations, which is one of the biggest challenges facing designers of WiMAX equipment. The new family of WiMAX transceiver also delivers optimum interoperability with a variety of basebands by utilizing standard analog I/Q and serial interfacing, and co-exists with cellular, WLAN and Bluetooth standards.

The UXA234XX WiMAX transceivers offer a fully integrated direct-up transmitter and ZIF architecture with a small foot print of 6×6×0.85mm. The solution set supports channel bandwidths from 3.5 MHz - 20 MHz, with no need for an external IF filter.

Samples of UXA23466 and UXA23476 WiMAX 2×2 MIMO transceivers are available now. The price is around $13.50.

Volume production is scheduled to be started in Q2 2007.
