USB Modules for CAN and LIN Applications - National Instruments

National Instruments released USB-847x, its new USB modules for Local Interconnect Network (LIN) monitoring and Controller Area Network (CAN) applications. With the release of this USB modules, developers now have a portable and low cost solution for CAN and LIN to PC interconnection.

The USB-847x interfaces simplified linking of PCs or laptops to automotive networks. Each interface is able to share start triggers and timestamps with USB CAN and LIN interfaces, and also with data acquisition, motion and vision devices, such as NI CompactDAQ and M Series (bus-powered) multifunction data acquisition. For example, an engineer conducting an automotive test, can monitor sensors, then determine the state of ECUs on the network

The USB-8476 LIN interfaces, is a cost-effective single-wire communication bus solution, Especially for networking of automotive sensors and actuators. NI’s LIN is compatible with 1.3, 2.0 and J2602 LIN standards. One major advantage of LIN is it does not require the versatility and bandwidth requirement as much as CAN solution. LIN can function in master, slave and monitor modes

All six of the interfaces feature Hi-Speed USB technology. The interfaces are bus-powered, with integrated transceivers, for rugged, plug-and-play functionality at a lower price point than comparable USB interfaces. An onboard hardware buffer, combined with the 40X improvement in bandwidth of Hi-Speed USB over full-speed USB, ensures that the USB modules do not drop frames.

The USB modules include NI-CAN driver for rapid development. Using NI-CAN, Developer can build and operate applications in a variety of programming environments, including NI LabVIEW, Measurement Studio, Microsoft C/C++ and Visual Basic. Additionally, NI-CAN driver software includes a CAN and LIN bus monitoring utility for immediate, out-of-the-box monitoring and logging of bus data to disk.
