TI announced the TPS61165, a high-brightness white LED driver which able to drive up to three 1 watt LEDs in series. The TPS61165’s input voltage range (3-V to 18-V) makes this chip suitable for single-cell, battery-powered applications. TI also introduced the TPS61160 and TPS61161 converters that integrate a 0.6-A current switch and support input voltages from 3-V to 18-V. TPS61160 and TPS61161 converters are targeted for battery powered applications with small displays, such as small LCD display backlighting in smart phones, GPS systems, and portable game players.

LED brightness can be controlled by TPS61165 driver with a digital single-wire interface or pulse width modulating (PWM) signal. The digital interface can program an internal register to set the LED current to one of the 32 logarithmic steps. The converter also comes with built-in protection features, such as open LED protection, soft-start, over-current limit and over-temperature protection.
