Texas Instruments announced the availability of the TMS320F28044 DSC (digital signal controller) 100 MIPS of DSP performance targeted at multi-channel point of load (POL) applications such as telecommunications and networking infrastructure equipment, laptop, servers, and industrial equipment. The new TMS320F28044 controller has the ability to manage DC to DC converter up to 16 channels.

The TMS320F28044 DSC is a single-chip digital solution for complex point-of-load power management systems. It implements up to 16 channels of unique TI’s HRPWM (high-resolution pulse width modulation) technology, based on the fully programmable TMS320C28x DSP core. TMS320F28044 controller also includes a high-speed 12-bit ADC, 128KB of flash memory, and multiple communications ports with support for the PMBus interface.

TMS320F28044 controller allows designers to build intelligence into power supply systems and simultaneously manage in real-time the sequencing, margining, phase compensation, and transient response of multiple DC/DC converters. The combined high performance of the F28044 controller and the integrated HRPWM channels provide the full digital loop control and output accuracy necessary at switching frequencies over 1MHz.

The TMS320F28044 performs all of the loop control, sequencing, system management, and communications for up to 16 DC rails, designers can eliminate all of the individual analog converters, standalone sequencing chips, and communications microcontrollers previously used in these complex point of load applications.

To speed-up application development, TI offers a $495 TMS320F28044 eZdsp Starter Kit development platform that support the TMS320F28044 controller. The eZdsp kit includes hardware tools and TI’s Code Composer Studio IDE. TI also offers a $295 DC/DC module from Tier Electronics, targeted for dual phase-shifted full-bridge topologies.

TI also offers free system and application software including the TMS320C2000 digital power software (DPS) library. The library is written in C code, and it provides reference software for major functions used in a variety of power supply applications. DPS library components available today include two-phase boost power factor correction (PFC), multi-channel DC/DC conversion, and a single-phase DC/AC inverter with additional software components to be added.

Samples of the TMS320F28044 controller are available today. Volume production in scheduled at the Q1 of 2007. Price: as low as $5.00 for high-volume.
