STMicroelectronics recently introduced the ST32 and ST33,  two
new smart card processor families for mobile-phone SIM cards.
Powered by ARM Cortex-M3 32-bit processor architecture plus its SC300
secure version
and large embedded-Flash memory capacities, the ST32 and ST33
smart card processors will allow mobile network operators to deliver richer
services to their subscribers.

Key features of ST32 Smart Card Processor Family:

  • 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 CPU
  • 416-Kbyte and 512-Kbyte Flash
  • 12-Kbyte RAM
  • UART compliant with ISO 7816-3 protocols down to ETU 8
  • CPU clock: 21 MHz typical
  • 1.8 V, 3 V and 5 V Vcc range

Key features of ST33 Smart Card Processor Family:

  • 32-bit ARM SC300 CPU
  • 1.28-Mbyte Flash
  • 30-Kbyte RAM
  • High-performance Nescrypt cryptographic engine
  • UART compliant with ISO 7816-3 protocols down to QQETU 8
  • SWP interface
  • SPI interface
  • EMVCo and CCEAL5+ certification
  • CPU clock: 21 MHz typical
  • 1.8 V, 3 V and 5 V Vcc range

The ST32 smart card processor family contains two devices offering a choice
of memory sizes. The ST32F416 and ST32F512 offer 416 KB and 512 KB
of embedded Flash, respectively, and address the 128 K and 256 K 2G and 3G
markets. Additional ST32 devices will be introduced with lower memory densities
in the future.

The ST33 smart card processor family, based on the SC300 highly secure
version of the ARM Cortex-M3, offers high level of security for high-end
SIM card market. The new ST33F1M features 1.2 MB of embedded Flash
with 30 Kbytes of RAM, an SWP (Single-Wire Protocol) interface for
NFC (Near Field Communication)
connectivity
, and the most advanced
cryptographic coprocessor (Nescrypt)
. The large embedded-Flash memory
size available in ST33F1M will allow telecom operators to enrich the multimedia
content of their (U)SIM cards. The intrinsic security level and wide
availability of interfaces, make ST33F1M suitable for innovative (U)SIM markets
such as Mobile Banking and Mobile TV.

The new ST32 and ST33 smartcard processors meet industry standards for SIM
card interfaces and communication, including ISO7816-3. In addition, ST33F1M
also targets the highest security levels, such as CC-EAL5+ and EMVCo
certifications. The new smartcard processors also achieve current consumption
requirements defined by GSM and ETSI standards.

ST21, ST32 and ST33 Smartcard Processors:

  Program Data RAM Cryptography Interface
ST21Y036 128 KB ROM 36 KB EEPROM 4 KB DES, AES SW ISO 7816
ST21Y068 248 KB ROM 68 KB EEPROM 6 KB DES, AES SW ISO 7816
ST21Y144 248 KB ROM 144 KB EEPROM 8 KB DES, AES SW ISO 7816
ST21F384 384 KB Flash 7 KB DES, AES SW ISO 7816
ST32F416 416 KB Flash 12 KB DES, AES SW ISO 7816
ST32F512 512 KB Flash 12 KB DES, AES SW ISO 7816
ST33F1M 1280 KB Flash 30 KB DES, EDES, AES SW, Nescrypt ISO 7816, SWP, SPI

ST21 is existing ST’s smart card processor family for mobile communication.
There are two architectures: ST21F (based on embedded Flash technology) and
ST21Y (based on embedded EEPROM technology).

The ST32F416 and ST32F512 smartcard processors are sampling now; volume
production is scheduled for early 2009. The ST33F1M smartcard processor will
begin sampling in February 2009; volume product is expected to be available in
mid 2009.
