STMicroelectronics announced the SN250, a ZigBee wireless networking single chip solution. This new ZigBee chip is compliant with IEEE 802.15.4 standard and also with EmberZNet stack. The SN250’s embedded EmberZNet stack was developed with Ember Corporation. This ZigBee-compliant stack is designs for battery operated peripherals. It only need a small count of external component.

ZigBee technology enables the implementation of broad-based wireless mesh networks that are
able to run for years on inexpensive primary batteries, making it a viable
alternative to costly hard-wired systems. The standards-based, lower-cost
technology is especially suited to building automation, for complete lighting,
ventilation, and climate-control systems; and for reducing installation costs
for industrial control and sensor applications.
The SN250’s RF transceiver provides performance beyond those specified in IEEE 802.15.4. It offers a Transmission Boost mode up to 5dBm increase in output power. Receiver sensitivity in Boost mode is 98dBm.
The SN250 ZigBee Wireless Networking chip is based on 16-bit RISC processor. It includes 128-kbytes of Flash and 5‑kbytes of SRAM, and a AES 128 hardware encryption engine. The chip offers wide range of peripherals, including I2C master, UART, SPI master/slave, 16-bit general purpose timer, watchdog timer, and 16-bit sleep timer
The SN250 ZigBee Wireless Networking chip is packed in QFN48 (7 x 7mm ) package. It is in sampling now. The volume production is scheduled on October 2006. Price of this is ZigBee IC is $5.00 each, for 5K lot qty.
