Freescale introduced its 8-bit S08QD microcontroller family for automotive applications. The S08QD family provides exceptional flexibility and functionality to help developers design a wider array of automotive applications. The compact and highly integrated S08QD is ideal for cost-sensitive automotive applications, including  mirror dimming, HVAC dampeners, actuators, watchdogs, sensors/meters, and push button control.

S08QD general features

  • 16 MHz HCS08 central processing unit
  • HC08 instruction set with added background (BGND) instruction
  • Flash read/program/erase over full operating voltage and temperature
  • Up to 4 KB flash memory
  • Up to 256B RAM
  • Dual 16-bit on-chip timers
  • Internal clock oscillator
  • 4-channel, 10-bit ADC
  • Single-wire background debug interface
  • 8-pin narrow body SOIC packaging

The S08QD microcontroller family integrates a 4x 10-bit ADC designed for higher resolution, faster conversion and an automatic compare function. The ADC enables the controller to easily interface with analog inputs from devices such as sensors by converting the analog signal to a digital value. The automatic-compare functionality allows the microcontroller to compute values and perform comparisons to a preset threshold.

The S08QD also includes an internal clock source (ICS) module containing a frequency-locked loop (FLL) controlled by an internal or external reference. The internal reference clock can eliminate the cost of all external clock components, which helps reduce board space and enhances system reliability.

The S08QD family offers a robust support environment and pin-compatible migration path within Freescale's 8-bit automotive microcontroller portfolio. The S08QD is pin-compatible with the SG and EL microcontroller families. Shared peripherals and a common set of development tools help make it quick and easy for engineers to leverage their design investments.

S08QD Features

Peripherals

  • ADC — 4-channel, 10-bit analog-to-digital converter with automatic compare function, asynchronous clock source, temperature sensor and internal bandgap reference channel. ADC is hardware triggerable using the RTI counter.
  • KBI — 4-pin keyboard interrupt module with software selectable polarity on edge or edge/level modes
  • TIM1 — 2-channel timer/pulse-width modulator; each channel can be used for input capture, output compare, buffered edge-aligned PWM, or buffered center-aligned PWM
  • TIM2 — 1-channel timer/pulse-width modulator; each channel can be used for input capture, output compare, buffered edge-aligned PWM, or buffered center-aligned PWM

Input/Output

  • 4 General-purpose input/output (I/O) pins, one input-only pin and one output-only pin. Outputs 10 mA each, 60 mA maximum for package.
  • Software selectable slew rate control and drive strength on ports when used as output
  • Software selectable pullups on ports when used as input
  • Internal pullup on RESET and IRQ pin to reduce customer system cost
