Microchip release new PICkit development tool series, the PICkit Serial Analyzer. This new enables design embedded engineer to easily interface with circuits that are embedded deep within serial systems using Windows based software.

PICkit Serial Analyzer comes with a 28-pin board with a PIC16F886 8-bit microcontroller. The kit's hardware and GUI software allow communication between the PC to microcontroller being tested, using serial protocols including USART, I2C and SPI.

PICkit Serial Analyzer

PICkit Serial Analyzer is an easy-to use interface that communicates between a PC controlled USB port and various serial ports. It can interface with circuits that are embedded deep within systems, electrically or mechanically, that have serial port access. It can also emulate serial circuitry to communicate with a PIC microcontroller. The PICkit Serial Analyzer hardware supports I2C™, SMBus, SPI and USART protocols. This microcontroller contains firmware to emulate typical serial system functions.

The PICkit Serial Analyzer includes software to communicate between a Windows PC and the serial protocol of the device under test. Scripts can be created and saved, and software templates can be modified to tailor the communications protocol. A 28-pin demonstration board and communication software are included in the kit. The software offers the following features and functionality:

  • Read and write using any of these protocols:
    • I2C
    • SMBus
    • SPI
    • USART
  • Script building
  • Template customization
  • Demo board testing
  • Software API for custom applications

Pricing:
The PICkit Serial Analyzer (part no DV164122) price is $49.99 for the complete kit, including user's guides for both the PICkit Serial Analyzer and the 28-pin board, source code, application notes, and free MPLAB IDE integrated development environment. Additionally, the 28-pin demo board (Part no DM164120-3) may be purchased separately for $24.99 and comes with one populated and two bare boards.
