Atmel introduced the ATR0874, a new photo detector IC (PDIC) which is designed to be used in optical pick-up units of CD and DVD drives. The ATR0874 photo detector comes with very tiny size (4 x 3.5 mm),  so it is suitable for slim CD and DVD drives found in portable PC.

The ATR0874 photo detector IC is packed in QFN open-housing that has an open cavity. This permit the laser direct access to the die surface and therefore to the photo diodes. This standard QFN housing has high soldering temperature limit (up to 260 degrees Celcius). This feature eliminate the need of specialized soldering procedures.

The ATR0874 PDIC is designed for CD-RW drive at a wavelength of 780 nm and high-speed DVD drive at wavelength of 650 nm. Due to the device's small footprint, it is ideally suited for applications with highly-restricted space specifications. The IC includes 10 channels with four different gain steps and is optimized for fast settling times and low offset voltages.

The ATR0874 photo detector IC is available with pricing at $1.00 each (10k lot qty)
