Artila Electronics announced (Oct 2006) their ARM9-based M-501, a Linux-ready System on Module (SoM). The dimension of the module are: 80 x 50 mm. This embedded-linux module use ATMEL AT91RM9200 RISC SoC, clocked at 180MHz. It has onboard 32MB SDRAM and 16MB Flash memory which include Linux 2.6 kernel, BusyBox utility collection, boa Web server, and some pre-installed hardware device drivers.
The M-501’s dual 2×25 Dual In Line (DIL) connectors are designed for I/O peripheral expansion. One 10/100M Ethernet, four UART serial communication, two USB 2.0 hosts , a Secure Data Card (SD) Interface, a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), annd Inter-IC (I2C) bus, an Inter-IC Sound (I2S) bus, and a 32-bit programmable digital I/O are available and already pre-defined on the two DIL connectors.
The M-501 also has an 8-bit local bus on the third 2×14 DIL connectors. The SDK (development kit) CD includes open source GNU C/C++ cross compiler. Simply plug the M-501 SoM into the custom-specific application board, then users can focus their time on the application software programming. With Artila’s having taken care of most of the software development, the user enjoys and cut 80% of regular development time and cost.
