Freescale introduced the MC9S08LC60 8-bit  microcontroller family, with integrated LCD driver. The MC9S08LC60 microcontroller family is targeted for industrial devices, handheld consumer devices and  communications devices which required LCD as part of user interface.

MC9S08LC60 microcontrollers are able to support up to 160 segments (4×40), give designers the flexibility to design LCD applications for portable thermostats, health care devices, exercise equipment, calculators, metering equipment, personal diagnostics, alarm clocks, cameras, toys, and many other consumer products.

MC9S08LC60 microcontrollers combines a low-voltage S08 MCU core (1.8V-3.6V operating voltage) with dual flash memory arrays, communications peripherals, programmable timer and LCD driver. This integration reduces board space and production cost.

S08 Architecture
Freescale's S08 architecture is built on Freescale's 0.25-micron process technology. It provides combination of high performance and low-power operation for cost-sensitive 8-bit embedded applications. The S08 architecture is optimized for extreme operating economy with multiple power management modes, targeted to  battery-powered and handheld applications.

The LCD Driver
The LC60’s LCD driver supports both 3V and 5V LCD applications with internal charge pump, enabling the applications to run off of single power supply. On-chip integration of an LCD driver and charge pump ultimately means faster design time, fewer required external components, reduced power consumption, and lower overall system cost. The MC9S08LC60’s LCD driver can be operated in MCU’s STOP or SLEEP mode, reducing power consumption and preserves battery life.

The LCD of driver of MC9S08LC60 microcontroller is able to support up to 160 segments graphical display. The LCD driver for the 80-pin LC60 package gives developers the flexibility to configure 4×40 or 3×41 segment displays, including up to 16 alphanumeric displays.

Memory
The MC9S08LC60 microcontrollers feature a dual flash memory block for enhanced EEPROM emulation. These dual flash block enables continued execution of code out of one block while programming or erasing the other block.

On-chip communication peripherals
The MC9S08LC60 microcontrollers has on-chip serial peripheral interface (SPI), 12C, serial communications interface (SCI) modules.

Development Tools
The LC60 family is supported by Processor Expert rapid application design tool, CodeWarrior SE for HC(S)08/RS08, including compiler, debugger, samples, documentation and application notes for the demo board. A demonstration kit optimized for the LC60 family contains the equipment designers need to develop and evaluate application code.
