Free Linux Solution for SuperH Microprocessors - Renesas

Renesas announced Free Linux solution for SH7354, SH7343, SH7722, and SH7763 series devices of Renesas 32-bit SuperH microprocessors. The new chips are targeted to be applied in industrial equipments, office automation products and multimedia products.

On February this year, the company announced it’s 32-bit Renesas SH7764 microprocessor with embedded Linux support.

The Renesas free linux solution consists of a Linux BSP (Board Support Package), Linux system integration, and network protocol stack. These software packages allows embedded Linux developers to shorten their development time.

Three of the Renesas devices, SH7343, SH7722 and SH7354 have built-in H. 264 video CODEC engine. Built on the SH4AL-DSP CPU core, these devices can handle JPEG, MP3, and MPEG-4 multimedia data. The SH7763 comes with a built-in floating point unit (FPU) for higher performance and precise real-time processing capabilities. It has Ethernet controller, USB interface and LCD controller, which make it ideal for office automation systems and industrial control applications.

SH4AL-DSP CPU core processors require only about 500Kbytes for Linux kernel operating system. The software is optimized to maximize network data throughput in multimedia and network applications. Network management stacks, GUI libraries,  media players and 3D graphics functions are supported.

The Linux Board Support Package includes device drivers for Ethernet, USB, LCD controller, serial, and audio interfaces. Video and audio CODEC functions have been pre-integrated and optimized. This code eliminates the need for developers to design their own drivers and can spend their time on enhancing performance of developed products.

Renesas free Linux Solution for SuperH 32-bit Microprocessors (SH7722, SH7354, SH7343 and SH7763  microprocessors) is scheduled to be available in 2nd quarter this year.
