STMicroelectronics has announced the FC30, a stand-alone 3D
orientation sensing
and click/double-click detection device. FC30 is
able to sense six different orientations with earth-gravity field
as reference. When a  mechanical tap/click is detected, the FC30 provides
an interrupt signal, allowing developers to integrate mouse-button like
controls in their design. FC30’s three external interrupt lines allow designers
to quickly build applications, such as automatic portrait/landscape recognition
for portable products.

Key features of STM’s FC30 3D orientation-sensor & click detector:

  • 3D orientation sensor: 3 orthogonal directions (6 positions)
  • Embedded click/double-click functionality
  • High shock survivability
  • Excellent quality and reliability
  • Testable after assembly without movement
  • ECOPACK, RoHS and “Green” compliant
  • Power down mode
  • Low power consumption
  • -40 ° C to +85 ° C temperature range
  • Housed in a 3 x 5 x 0.9mm 14-pin LGA ECOPACK SMD package

The FC30 3D orientation & click detection is a 3 x 5 x 0.9mm 14-pin LGA
ECOPACK surface-mount device. Samples of FC30 will be available immediately.
Volume production quantities of this 3D orientation sensor will be available in
Q3 this year at prices in the $1 range.
