Microchip dsPICDEM MCLV Development Board for Motor Control Applications
Posted in Development Tools, Microchip, Motor & Motion ControlOn Thursday, January 29, 2009
Microchip has announced the availability of the dsPICDEM MCLV Development
Board, a new motor-control development platform for building and evaluating
sensored or sensorless BLDC (Brushless DC) and PMSM (Permanent Magnet
Synchronous Motor) control applications. dsPICDEM MCLV Development Board is
targeted to motor control applications using dsPIC DSC (Digital Signal
Controller). It supports Microchip’s dsPIC33F family of motor control DSCs.
To speed-up time to market, developers are encouraged to use the free of
charge MPLAB IDE Version 8.15. The graphical DMCI (Data Monitor and
Control Interface) in this MPLAB IDE version has been enhanced to include a
Real-Time Data Monitor (RTDM) function, providing a graphical method to
input and adjust motor parameters in real time. Source code for the motor-control libraries is
also can be downloaded without charge from Microchip’s website.

Microchip’s dsPICDEM MCLV Development Board contains a 3-phase inverter
bridge circuit. This circuit drives a BLDC or PMSM motor using different control
techniques, without requiring any additional hardware. The dsPICDEM MCLV board
is capable of controlling motors rated up to 48V and 15 Amps, and supports
multiple communication channels, such as RS-232, USB, CAN and LIN.

dsPICDEM MCLV Development Board (Part No DM330021)
dsPICDEM MCLV Development Board employs a processor-differentiated Plug-In
Module (PIM) strategy to support a variety of dsPIC33F motor-control DSCs with
different memory and pin configurations. The board supports Microchip’s 28-pin
SOIC and 100-pin Plug-In-Modules with dsPIC33F Digital Signal Controllers. A
dsPIC33FJ32MC204 PIM (32 KB Flash and 44 pins) is included with the dsPICDEM
MCLV Development Board.
Devices Supported:
- 28-pin to 100-pin dsPIC33FJXXXMC202 PIM (MA330014) with a dsPIC33F motor
control device socket - 44-pin to 100-pin dsPIC33FJXXXMCX04 PIM (MA330017 and MA330018) with a
dsPIC33F motor control device socket - 100-pin to 100-pin dsPIC33FJXXXMCX10 PIM (MA330013) with a dsPIC33F motor
control device socket - The dsPIC33FJ12MC202 motor control device in SOIC package footprint
Motor Control Interfaces:
- Three-phase inverter bridge with a power rating of 48V/15A
- Phase voltage feedback for sensorless BLDC operation
- Hall sensors/quadrature encoder interface for sensored motor control
