Digi introduced its new Digi DialServ, an RJ-11 telephone line simulator that allows legacy devices with built-in modems to communicate across LANs/WANs. Digi DialServ extends the life of existing remote equipment by allowing devices to communicate with a centralized location as if they were TCP/IP devices. Using seamless integration to Digi cellular and Ethernet gateways, Digi DialServ is able to provide secure IPsec or SSL VPN connections over public networks.

Digi DialServ requires virtually no configuration, making it very easy to deploy. Common applications include SCADA (industrial automation, utilities, etc.), retail/point-of-sale and building automation/security, and infrastructure including devices such as ATMs, RTUs, kiosks, security panels, credit card/payment terminals and pay-at-the-pump controllers.

Key features of Digi DialServ phone line simulator:

  • When used in conjunction with Digi cellular gateways:
    • Converts analog/PSTN data to IP/packet data
    • Data routing methods
      • Fixed IP address
      • Phone number as IP address
      • Look-up table for IP address based on phone number
      • Passing phone number to fixed IP address for routing
      • Secure IPSec and SSL tunneling available with Digi VPN gateways
    • Fully configurable through Web UI of the attached cellular gateway
  • Integrated mounting brackets
  • V.34 support with full error correction and compression
  • Supports all modem connection rates from 300 baud to 33.6 Kbaud
  • Integrated off-hook and transmit LEDs
  • Power connector with locking plug

When used with Digi cellular gateways, the Digi DialServ works with both dial-in and dial-out applications by simulating the Telco network and converting the requested phone number to an IP address. It makes the device think it is still communicating over Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS). When coupled with a Digi cellular VPN gateway/router, the Digi DialServ is able to create a secure connection, even across public networks.

Replacing old phone lines with IP communications allows customers to leverage higher availability, lower-cost networks, while potentially reducing monthly recurring costs related to phone bills. Also, devices using Digi DialServ over high speed IP networks often realize much faster transaction time versus slow dial-up modems.

Digi DialServ is designed to integrate with the Digi ConnectWAN family, ConnectPort WAN VPN and ConnectPort X family of cellular gateways. By facilitating wireless IP connectivity to legacy devices where wired connectivity no longer satisfies customer needs, the Digi DialServ also intelligently integrates with Digi’s Drop-in Networking solutions.
