ColdFire with On-Chip USB On The Go and The Development Tools - Freescale

Freescale has expanded its ColdFire USB device portfolio. The expansion includes the MCF5253 embedded processor with Hi-Speed USB On-The-Go and the MCF5221x microcontrollers with Full-Speed USB On-The-Go (OTG). The chips come with a complimentary USB software stack (in collaboration with CMX Systems). The ColdFire USB integrates USB transceivers. this feature significantly reduces board space and also simplifies system designs.

These ColdFire with USB On-The-Go provide highly integrated embedded control for designers who need cost-effective USB connectivity for factory automation, industrial control, HVAC systems, point-of-sale equipment, health care monitoring and fire/alarm systems.

USB On-The-Go gives developers the option of using the on-chip USB module as a USB device or a USB host. USB OTG also allows multiple USB devices to communicate without a host interface, making it ideal for system-to-system communication applications.

MCF5221x microcontrollers
This microcontroller family provides a single-chip embedded control solution that implements USB 2.0 Full-speed On-The-Go (Host or Device). It also has integrated USB transceiver. key features of  MCF5221x microcontrollers:

• ColdFire V2 core delivering 76 Dhrystone 2.1 MIPS at 80 MHz
• 16Kbytes SRAM
• Up to 128Kbytes of flash memory
• Up to 56 general-purpose I/O (GPIO)
• Two inter-integrated circuit bus interface modules
• Two-channel periodic interrupt timer
• Four-channel 32-bit timers with DMA support
• 12-bit analog to digital converter (ADC)
• Real-time clock with 32kHz crystal
• Up to three on-chip UARTs
• Available speeds: 66 MHz and 80 MHz

MCF5253 embedded processor

The MCF5253 is an embedded control solution with Hi-Speed USB On-The-Go which has an on-chip USB PHY. The processor also includes an eMAC (enhanced multiply/accumulate) module, avoiding the need for an external DSP to handle filtering and other signal processing tasks. Key features of MCF5253 embedded processor:

• ColdFire V2 core at 140 MHz
• Integrated eMAC module
• 128Kbytes of SRAM
• 8Kbytes I-cache
• SDRAM controller
• Two CAN 2.0B modules
• Four-channel DMA controller
• Three UARTs with flow control
• I2S interface (Rx x2/Tx x3)
• Dedicated ATA hard disk interface
• Real-time clock module
• Flash media card interface
• Six-channel 12-bit A/D converter
• 1.2V core, 3.3V I/O, under 40mA current draw ( at 140 MHz)

Development tools
ColdFire USB controllers are supported by a set of software development tools:

• Special Edition of Freescale's CodeWarrior Development Studio is included.
• Some open-source GNU tools are also available to support development of ColdFire USB controllers.
• µCLinux Board Support Package (BSP) with an integrated USB stack for the MCF5253 embedded processor.
• CMX’s USB software for MCF5253 and MCF5221x family device.

Freescale also ready with evaluation module for MCF5253 and MCF5221x. The M52211EVB is offered at a suggested resale price of $299, and the the M5253EVBE is  $680.
